What a Great Life
I grew up in Mattoon, Il where my grandfather William Hamel, started the daily paper - The Mattoon Journal Gazette - and my dad William B. Hamel II was publisher for 45 years. My mother, Mary E. Hamel wrote a weekly column "Something Different For Women" where she reviewed products and made humorous observations. She was Mrs. Illinois in 1965 and first runner up for Mrs. America.

I also spent many weekends with my grandmother May June Harris and grandfather E.B. Harris, in Chicago where he was President of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

With my parents encouragement, I left home at 14 to attend Interlochen Arts Academy to pursue my ballet career. At 16 I received my first ballet contract in Seattle. Toe shoes then led me to San Francisco, Tulsa and New York City. It was when I was working at US Magazine in New York that I decided I really wanted to focus entirely on advertising. Plus, the roaches in our small apartment in Chelsea refused to pay rent.
